Stinky Mushrooms

On Saturday, August 27th Mr. Bentley and I went out for a walk before the big hurricane rolled in.  Our Mission: To photograph the Ecuadorian Embassy and record the earthquake damage there.  On our way there, we saw these guys…

These mushrooms are  called Mutinus caninus and they are in the stink horn family.  The tops of the fruiting body are covered in a stinky slime.  This stinky slime is an attractant for flies, which eat up the spores and transport the mushrooms.  for more on stinkhorns follow this link.
